The opponent was Prof. Jérôme Waser from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. The defence started with a presentation of Joel's thesis by the opponent.

Then the question part begun, and Joel and Jérôme had a very interesting discussion on a range of topics related to the thesis. The examination committee also asked questions, then the session was closed.

| The examination committee consisted of Prof. Ola Wendt, Lund University, Assoc. Prof. Eszter Borbas, Uppsala University, and Docent Jan-Erik Nyström, Alveiro LifeScience. Prof. Kalman Szabo from Stockholm University was the chair person and reserve member. The examination committe has come to a verdict - Joel passed and is now entitled PhD in Organic Chemistry! |

| The dissertation party was held the same evening at Folkets Hus in Sundbyberg. Several old group members participated both at the defence and at the party. | |
