BONS Christmas conference

We had the traditional Christmas conference with the Selander group. this year's topic was on the doctoral degree objectives that are difficult to practice on a daily basis, e.g. outreach activities.

Part 1: At the Swedish Parliament

The Nobel Laureates Frances Arnold (Chemistry) and Tasuku Honjo (Medicine) were invited to the Swedish Parliament by the organization Rifo, official program can be found here.

The BONS groups participated in the event, below is the BO group gathered in the hallway of the Parliament.

Frances Arnold and Tasuku Honjo gave their views on what politicians should think about in funding science & technology research.

We could even take a group photo with Frances Arnold, although a few of the group members were cut off in the spnntaneous photography event.

Part 2: Conference at Hasselbacken

Tasks to prepare & present (in groups)

  1. A journalist at Dagens Nyheter asks you to explain what type of research we do at the Department, and why tax money should be spent on this. Explain so that a non specialist can understand.
  2. You are sent to a high school class (9th grade) to motivate them to study chemistry / natural science at the ”gymnasium”. What would you do?
  3. How can chemists help saving the world (climate change, environmental problems etc)?
  4. Which are the most important ethical questions for chemists to tackle? Explain to a non-chemist audience.
  5. Analyze the presentations from the Nobel laureates Arnold and Honjo – how did they choose to convey their message?
